Cain

Cain shot Jeremiah an apologetic look across the long dining room table. “I’ve got a couple of pizzas on the way,” Cain said. “I know that peanut butter and jelly sandwich isn’t really going to cut it…”

Jeremiah just shrugged and gave him a warm smile. “It’s great, honestly. You didn’t need to order anything special for me.”

“No, I really did need to.” Cain crinkled his nose. “I have someone who comes by to make dinner for me through the week, but I usually just go out to eat or grab some take-out on the weekends. I’ll fix it, though. And then tomorrow we can go to the grocery store and get some real food if you want.”

Cain didn’t even really know what he was saying anymore. The words were just tumbling out of his mouth. Was he really offering to go grocery shopping with Jeremiah? Hopefully Jeremiah would have a better idea of what they should eat than Cain did.

But he really should probably ask Jeremiah if he was even okay with staying the night before making too many plans for the two of them this weekend.

“We can um…” Jeremiah’s face flushed as he looked back down at his half-eaten sandwich. “I mean, whatever you want to do is fine with me. I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“I don’t think you could be any trouble even if you tried,” Cain said, meaning it. “You might be the nicest—and quietest—person I’ve ever met.”

Jeremiah laughed. “I doubt that. I mean, yeah, I guess I’m pretty quiet sometimes. But… I bet you know a lot of nice people.”

Cain smiled but didn’t bother correcting him. Jeremiah had looked surprised—shocked, actually—earlier when Cain had said that there weren’t any other presents under his Christmas tree. To hear that Cain didn’t really have any friends—not any real friends, anyway—would no doubt shock him all over again.

And probably prompt some more questions that Cain really wasn’t comfortable answering out loud.

Questions about why Cain didn’t trust people. Why he wouldn’t let anyone close enough to be considered a friend.

Why he lived alone in a five-floor townhouse that felt so empty and cold sometimes. Especially this time of year.

“I should probably apologize for earlier,” Cain said, abruptly changing the subject. He might not be able to talk about himself, but he did need to at least make sure Jeremiah was at ease and was okay with staying the night. Cain hadn’t really given him the option earlier, but he hadn’t really thought much about it himself, either. He’d just acted on instinct, like he always did. “I normally don’t burst into people’s houses and start throwing punches, so I really do apologize if I scared you or made you feel… unsafe at all.”

He didn’t—and wouldn’t—apologize for hitting that asshole who had put his hands on Jeremiah, though. That guy didn’t deserve any kindness at all, much less an actual apology.

“Thank you, but,” Jeremiah swallowed hard. “You don’t have to apologize for anything. You… saved me. You somehow knew
